Today is Time To Talk Day- a day dedicated to getting people talking about mental health.
“A small conversation about mental health has the power to make a big difference.”
Here at ICS, we take mental health very seriously. We understand the power in having discussions and how it can alleviate mental health strain and feelings of isolation that many suffer from. There are number of services on offer here to encourage conversation and keep our community connected:
Our Walk N’ Talk sessions are underway and provide you with the opportunity to go on a 1-on-1 walk with an ICS be-friender volunteer. The walks are socially distanced, COVID-compliant and offer the chance to get some fresh air, exercise and to socialise. To get involved, email memory-services@irishcommunityservices.org.uk or call 0208 854 4466
As part of our online community project, we run a Carers Chat Group every Friday at 11:30am. This is a space where carers can have a catch-up, confide in one another and more. Sign up for these weekly chats here: https://www.irishcommunityservices.org/ics-community-online - Additionally, in collaboration with Cross Roads Care, on Wednesday, 24th February we are hosting a carers wellbeing morning – Caring For The Carers- which will consist of chatting, updates on information surrounding carers, chair exercises (with free resistance bands if you sign up in advance) and games. Enrolment closes on Wednesday; 17th February so be sure to sign up! Email memory-services@irishcommunityservices.org.uk or call 0208 854 4466.
The ICS team are also here to talk anytime between 9am and 5pm Monday – Friday if you would ever just like to chat or need help or advice with anything.
Here are some tips from Greenwich Get Active to help keep you active and incorporate physical activity into your daily routine:
· cleaning your home
· gardening
· dancing to music
· going up and down stairs
· playing catch, skipping, hula hooping, hopscotch
· seated exercises (check out or ICS online chair classes Wednesdays at 11am: https://www.irishcommunityservices.org/ics-community-online)
· sitting less – if you notice you’ve been sitting down for an hour, just getting up or changing position can help
Today is also World Cancer Day. We offer a cancer self-help group open to anyone suffering from or affected by cancer. For more information, email advice-health@irishcommunityservices.org.uk.
We know just how trying these times are, but it is so important to remember that- whatever you are feeling- you are not alone and you can always reach out. Your mental health is just as important as your physical health, so make sure you make time to talk.
