Dementia affects 1 in 6 people over the age of 80 and there are currently 850,000 people suffering with dementia in the UK. It takes a heavy toll, especially on the families of those diagnosed and 209,600 people are anticipated to develop dementia this year which equates to 1 person every 3 minutes.
Where there is no cure for Alzheimer’s disease or any other type of dementia, here at ICS, we do everything we can to support those affected and their families. Living with, and caring for those affected by dementia can be challenging and frustrating and we recognise the importance and value of providing sensitive support.
Our dementia support services are somewhat limited at the moment given the circumstances, however, with regular phone calls and online platforms, we are staying in contact with those living with dementia. We offer chair-based exercises, choir sessions and bingo games that people with dementia can access with the support of family or a carer. For our carers, we host a chat group every Friday at 11:30am where you can converse with other carers, exchange advice, discuss issues and have a general chat.
Irish Community Services take great pride in being part of the Royal Borough of Greenwich ‘Dementia Inclusive Greenwich’ initiative that works to ensure the borough is a dementia-friendly space to live.
If yourself, a family member, or anyone you know could possibly benefit from our memory services, please do not hesitate to get in touch: memory-services@irishcommunityservices.org.uk or call 020 8854 4466. We are here to help. Until next time, continue to stay safe.
