Yes, I know this week’s blog is a day early but can you blame me? It’s St. Patrick’s Day! We had to make an exception. So without further ado, happy St. Patrick’s Day! We hope you all celebrating as much as you can whether it’s from the garden or on Zoom.
This week we’re using the lucky number 7 to show you 7 ways you can give back to your community this St. Patrick’s Day…
1. Give your time:
Spend some time assisting someone vulnerable or in need where you can. It can be someone you know personally, or you could volunteer at an organisation. Here at ICS, we have launched a be-friender volunteering scheme where you can support people from the comfort of you home. Email office@irishcommunityservices.org.uk to to get involved!
2. Do a random act of kindness for a friend, a neighbour or even a stranger:
Light up someone’s day with the smallest gesture - it could be as simple as paying them a compliment or sending them a little gift.
3. Order from your local takeaway instead of a chain restaurant:
As small a change as it is for you, it makes all the difference for a small food vendor when your order comes through. It’s an easy and tasty way to give back to your community.
4. Plant a tree:
For St. Patrick’s Day, it’s only right you nurture your green thumb and give something back to nature.
5. Volunteer to help someone:
Whether your niche is tutoring, gardening, or anything in between- offer your skills to a neighbour or friend and really feel that sense of community.
6. Become a Community Champion:
The Royal Borough of Greenwich is seeking community spirited people to join a team of champions in helping to share key information and advice about coronavirus. All you need to do is share said information with your friends, family and networks- it could not be easier so to get championing, click here.
7. And finally, donate to a cause important to you:
If you can, why not make a monetary contribution to a local charity who’s work resonates with you. It will be so appreciated by the organisation and is a great way to support your community.
These are just a few ideas to get the ball rolling, but whatever the gesture- no matter how big or small- it makes a difference. Honour Irish Community Services this St. Patrick’s Day and keep our community connected!
Once you've ticked off your good deed, be sure to join us on Zoom at 2pm for our St. Patrick's Day celebrations. Get your green on and we'll see you there!
Until next time, “may your troubles be less, and your blessings be more and nothing, but happiness come through your door” – Irish blessing.
